Saving for a vacation: agree on the whole trip cost

Add travel, accommodation, food, local transport and activities before choosing a trip budget. Subtract savings already set aside, then agree on deposits and who contributes what.

A $2,000 trip with $500 already reserved

Illustrative USD plan over 10 monthly deposits. No interest or fees.

Remaining: $2,000 - $500
$1,500
Across 10 monthly deposits
$150/month
First contribution: 60%
$90per month
Second contribution: 40%
$60per month
The $150 monthly total is split $90 and $60 by agreement. A 60/40 split is an example, not a rule for fairness.

1Include the costs beyond booking

Add meals, local travel, activities and any required fees to transport and accommodation. Use current quotes and leave room for changes.

2Check when each cost is due

A booking deposit may come before the trip. Use the earlier payment deadline for that portion so a final-date target does not hide a cash gap.

3Agree on contributions together

Decide who contributes which amount and what each person pays directly. Keep the agreement separate from an assumption that every expense is shared equally.

4Review before making commitments

Check the saving amount against normal bills. If it does not fit, change the trip, contributions or dates before taking on costs. Avoid double-counting shared savings.

Try it with your numbers

Frequently asked questions

Can we use separate accounts?

Yes. Keep a clear list of what each person has reserved for the trip. Only count each amount once in the combined goal.

Does the planner divide deposits between partners?

No. It calculates the total deposit schedule. Apply your agreed split separately; the example shows one possible agreement.
