How much should I save each payday?
Amount left to save = target minus money already set aside for that same goal, with a minimum of zero. The calculator counts scheduled dates from the first deposit through the target date, both inclusive. It divides the remainder into near-equal deposits. Extra cents go to the last deposits so the total is exact.
Choose weekly, biweekly or monthly deposits
Weekly deposits are 7 days apart. Biweekly deposits are 14 days apart. Monthly deposits use the original day of the month, clamped to shorter months. January 31 therefore becomes February 28 or 29, then March 31. This tool does not shift weekends or bank holidays, so check your actual transfer dates.
Example: reach $10,000 with $2,000 already set aside
From October 16, 2026 through October 15, 2027, a 14-day schedule has 27 deposit dates. The $8,000 remainder becomes 10 deposits of $296.29 and 17 of $296.30. The final planned total is $10,000. Inclusive endpoints are why this example has 27 dates rather than assuming 26.
Plan an emergency fund, family trip or deposit
Choose a target based on your own costs and timeline. A plan for a baby fund, holiday or emergency buffer uses the same arithmetic. The CFPB notes that an emergency fund target depends on your situation. This calculator does not recommend a universal target, check affordability or open a savings account.
If the required deposit is too high
Compare the deposit with bills and income on the same dates. You can lower the target, move the deadline or adjust the first deposit. A later start leaves fewer dates, so it can increase the required amount. If existing savings already meet the target, every planned additional deposit is zero.
Keep or share your dated savings plan
Download a paginated PDF or a values-only CSV with deposit dates, amounts and cumulative planned totals. The total includes the starting savings you entered. Deposits are plans, not confirmed payments. The calculation excludes interest, fees, inflation and investment returns; a longer deadline changes the number of dates only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate savings needed by a certain date?
Subtract money already saved for the goal from the target. Count deposit dates from your first deposit through the deadline. Divide the remaining amount across those dates and adjust final cents to reach the exact target.
Can I calculate biweekly savings by payday?
Yes. Choose Every 2 weeks and set your first deposit to a payday. The calculator schedules dates 14 days apart through the target date.
Are the first and final dates included?
Yes. A deposit is included on the first date and on the target date if it falls on the chosen schedule. A first date equal to the target date gives one deposit.
Does the calculator include compound interest?
No. It models only planned deposits and existing savings. It excludes interest, fees, inflation and investment returns.
What happens to a monthly deposit on the 31st?
It uses the last day of a shorter month, then returns to the original day when possible. A January 31 start becomes February 28 or 29, then March 31.
Is this a free printable savings goal planner?
Yes. Download a PDF with dates and amounts, or a CSV for a spreadsheet. No email, account or payment is required.
Are my financial inputs saved?
No. Inputs stay in this page's memory. They are not sent to Oaktally, stored in your browser or placed in the URL. Download before closing or refreshing. Currency changes labels and rounding, not exchange rates.
