Moving in

Moving in together: money checklist

Before moving in, agree on upfront costs, the monthly budget, who pays each bill and how you will handle changes. Write down the amounts before committing to shared expenses.

Four agreements before the move

Write down an amount, an owner and a date for each.

Before you commit

List rent, deposit, moving costs, furniture and setup fees. Agree on which costs you share and how much each person contributes. Keep a record of who bought shared items.

Before the first bill

Estimate rent, utilities, groceries and household supplies. Compare equal and income-based contributions. Choose the person paying each bill and a date for any transfer.

Before adding shared savings

Choose one goal and a monthly amount that fits after bills. Decide where the savings will sit and how you will track each person's contribution.

Before plans change

Discuss what happens if income falls, someone moves out or a shared purchase needs to be sold. Record how you will review the budget and settle outstanding contributions.

Frequently asked questions

Should we combine our bank accounts when we move in?

You do not need to combine accounts to plan shared costs. Choose the payment setup that fits your agreement and comfort with sharing.

What should our first money conversation cover?

Start with take-home income, recurring commitments, move-in costs and monthly bills. Agree on contributions and payment dates before choosing savings goals.

Is this checklist only for couples getting married?

No. It is for couples planning to share a home, whether or not they plan to marry.
