This worksheet plans amounts. The Excel file also compares shared-bill contributions. It does not track bank balances.

What is inside the workbook?

Three sheets: a short setup guide, a monthly budget and a contribution comparison. Blue cells are editable. Formulas recalculate total income, shared bills, assigned money and the amount left to plan. A negative amount means the plan assigns more than your income.

How to use the Excel budget template

Enter monthly take-home pay for both partners. Add rent, utilities, groceries and other shared bills. Set a savings amount and personal amounts for each of you. Download Excel to carry these figures into the workbook, then save a separate copy for each month.

Compare equal and income-based contributions

The Contributions sheet divides the shared-bill total both equally and in proportion to income. It shows what each person has left after those bills. Savings and personal commitments stay separate, so this comparison does not establish affordability or decide who must pay.

Open the workbook in Google Sheets

Download the XLSX, then open Google Sheets and choose File, Import, Upload. Select the workbook and import it as a new spreadsheet. Check the totals before using it. This is an importable Excel file, not a hosted Google Sheets template or a connection to your bank.

Use it in an article or workshop

You may share the worksheet with readers or workshop participants. A link to this page helps readers find the latest version, but credit is optional. Keep the example figures labeled as examples and do not describe them as research or a recommended budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a free Excel budget template for couples?

Yes. Downloading the workbook does not require an account, email address or payment.

Does the XLSX contain working formulas?

Yes. Totals and contribution comparisons recalculate when you edit the blue input cells. The CSV download contains values only.

Can we keep separate bank accounts?

Yes. The workbook plans shared contributions without combining your bank accounts. It does not track transfers, account balances or who has already paid.

Are our budget figures sent to Oaktally?

No. The workbook is generated in your browser. Your financial inputs are not uploaded, added to the URL or saved in browser storage. Save the downloaded file somewhere you trust.

Does changing the currency convert our money?

No. Currency controls the label, formatting and decimal precision. It does not apply an exchange rate. Use one currency throughout the workbook.
