1Pick one place to record
A notebook, spreadsheet or app can work. Use one main log so the same receipt does not land in several totals.
2Capture the useful details
Record the date, amount, currency and category. Add a short note only when you need it to understand the purchase later.
3Check statements and receipts
Look for missing purchases, refunds and duplicate records. A card repayment settles the card; do not count it as new spending if the purchases are already logged.
4Compare totals with the plan
Review category totals each week. Use the difference to adjust the next plan, rather than assuming an unused budget amount is money saved.

Do I need a separate category for every store?
Usually not. Group by what you bought or the decision you need to make. A store may sell items for several categories.
Is the linked worksheet a transaction tracker?
No. It plans monthly amounts. Keep your actual purchase log separately, then use its totals to review the worksheet.
